There is a beauty in ‘flow’ – a smooth uninterrupted motion that brings calmness to the mind, body and spirit. Water flowing down a stream, clouds floating in the sky or balloons moving higher away – all being transported to unknown and unexpected places, no limits and no bounds.
As the pen touches paper, the mind becomes alert, mindful and calm. This mindful attention helps us convert the chaos in our heads into sorted and organized thoughts that bring a sense of calmness along with it. The calmness of the flowing thoughts usher creativity which further stimulate our thinking. Taking us into unexpected directions, unknown places, opening doors we hadn’t imagined – all to take us closer towards our desired outcome.
As the pen starts moving, often making shapes and patterns, the visual mind transports our thoughts to the next level as they start to take real form and shape. Understanding, Organizing, interpreting and analyzing information becomes relatively easier when done in the form of visuals which also form an integral part of impactful communication.
Understanding some basic visual thinking techniques can enable us to achieve a better flow of stimulated thoughts. Reduce overwhelm, solve problems, make decisions, boost our creativity and even communicate more effectively and impactfully.
A number of scientific studies have proven these points on using pen-paper and relying on visual thinking, but I would rather let your thoughts flow with creativity than bind you with facts and figures which each one of us has at our finger tips today.
Most people are hesitant to pick up the pen and paper because of the perceived lack of artistic abilities. But unlike popularly believed, Visual Thinking requires zero artistic abilities. If you have, at some point, resorted to idle doodling to pass your time, then that talent is enough to take us on the beginning of our visual thinking journey. This talent can be refined and used to your advantage in any situation by developing basic visual thinking techniques taught in my training programs.
